Senior Fitness Ideas
Exercise is important at any age, but especially for seniors. It is essential that older adults continue getting regular exercise as it helps with their strength and balance, controls their weight, and can help with cardiovascular health. The following fitness ideas are ideal for senior adults.
Walking is definitely an exercise most seniors are able to do. It doesn’t have to be marathon training or walking up and down steep inclines either. All you need is to get your body moving on a regular basis. Whether this is a 30 or 45-minute walk 3 days a week or a short 10-15 minute walk each evening, you need to make sure you are getting regular exercise. You can make it short and simple, such as walking around the block before getting your mail, taking your dog for a nice afternoon stroll, or walking at a nearby park with a friend or your significant other. If you are out of shape, start slow with just 5 minutes a day, and gradually increase it each week.
There are aerobics classes that are low-impact and provide a good workout without being too intense. Depending on your health and physical capacity, you can take a standard low-impact aerobics class, or find one specifically for seniors. They are going to provide good exercise, either way, so don’t worry too much about taking a ‘senior’ class. The aerobic activity might be through a class at your gym, or with other cardio workouts that are low-impact, such as going on a simple hike or playing a game of racquetball in your senior community.
Swimming is great if you have arthritis or other physical pains since you are getting all the weight off your joints. It can be really soothing and calming, and also include some cardio workouts as well. There are swimming aerobics classes, or you can take a senior swimming class where it provides gentle exercises to get your body moving without causing any pain or discomfort.
Simple Ways to Get More Exercise
Adding more exercise or fitness into your daily routine doesn’t have to require going on a mile run or heading to the gym each day. There are a lot of daily activities that help improve your fitness activity, such as walking down the street to meet a friend for coffee, taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator, or parking at the end of a parking lot to walk further into a store or business.
