Tips for Lightening Up Your Pasta Salad

Who doesn’t love a good pasta salad? If you are not on a low-carb diet and can have pasta, but would prefer an option that it is a little better for you, you are going to love these options.

Add More Veggies to it

The first way you can make your pasta a little healthier is to add more veggies. A lot of pasta salad consists of pasta noodles, cheese, dressing, and even sometimes crumbled bacon. You can get rid of the fatty bacon and start adding in veggies instead. There are tons of ways to do this, from using chopped broccoli and cauliflower to peas, carrots, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, and so many others. Get creative with it, use small pieces of veggies, and people will still love the pasta salad. Plus, it is now a lot more nutritious.

Use a Healthy Mayo Alternative

One of the most unhealthy parts of a traditional pasta salad is mayonnaise. There is usually a good amount of mayo to make it creamy and turn the noodles and veggies into a salad. However, this is definitely not recommended. You just need something equally creamy, but without all the added fat and calories. A great option is to use plain yogurt instead. This will considerably lower in fat and calories, plus it adds a fun flavor to your pasta salad. You can use plain yogurt or go with Greek yogurt.

Skip the Cheese

Many pasta salads will add in more fat, which is only going to increase how unhealthy it is. You can make a healthier pasta salad by not adding in cheese. You really don’t need cheese in your pasta salad, no matter which recipe you are working with. The noodles with a light dressing or some creamy yogurt and lots of veggies are all you need. People will love it even without the cheese, don’t worry! You are reducing the fat and calories, plus if you are using more of a vinaigrette instead of a creamy dressing, it can also be good for anyone with a dairy sensitivity.

Look at your normal pasta salad recipe and try to find ways you can make it a bit healthier. Don’t overthink it. Just look for small changes and you will be amazed that it still tastes delicious and is better for everyone who will be eating it.
